New summer safety warning to north east children about construction site dangers

HSE/NE/266/09 13 July 2009

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has issued a new warning urging parents in the North East to keep their children away from construction sites.

In the past two years, there have been nearly 60 serious injuries to children on UK construction sites, including one death, and HSE is concerned that there may be an increased danger this year with more sites being mothballed during the economic downturn.

Companies are being reminded that, even if no work is taking place, regular checks should be carried out to make sure people are not able to get onto sites and that the sites remain in a safe condition.

Rob Hirst, Principal Inspector with HSE's Construction Division in the North East, said:

"We want children to enjoy playing outside during the summer holidays but it's vital they stay safe. Construction sites often appeal to young people as they can appear as adventure playgrounds.

"Scaffolding, excavations, fragile surfaces, electricity cables and stored building materials may all present potential dangers and there should be effective security fencing around the sites to prevent unauthorized access.

"The recession has led to some sites shutting down in the North East, which means there is not the same on-site supervision as when work was ongoing.

"I'm taking this opportunity to remind companies of their duty to ensure all building sites are left safe and are properly secured. They should also carry out regular site visits to check that fencing is still effective.

"I also hope that parents will remind their children of the risks of playing on construction sites and encourage them to stay aware during the holidays."

The construction sector is seen as one of the most dangerous industries in the UK, with 600 serious injuries in the North East in 2007/8.

Notes to editors

In 2006/7, 30 children aged 15 and under were seriously injured in the construction sector, and one died. In 2007/8, 28 children were seriously injured.
