Employment agency bosses invited to wake up to free breakfast and money saving advice

Nottinghamshire employment agency bosses are invited to a free breakfast to discover more about their health and safety responsibilities and how it can save their business money.

The event on Tuesday 27 January has been co-ordinated by the Health and Safety Executive and is a chance for agencies to see how the law affects them.

Held at the Belfry Hotel in Nottingham, the event will run from 8.30am to 12 noon.

Employment agencies have legal responsibilities for the health and safety of staff they supply to other employers, but these responsibilities could be better understood.

The event aims to clarify employment agencies' roles in managing their staff's health and safety.

Figures reveal that 2.6 million working days were lost in the East Midlands owing to injury and ill health last year.

HSE inspector Maureen Kingman, said:

"By reducing the number of injuries and the causes of ill health, employers can save themselves money by cutting down the number of working days lost. This is particularly important in the current economic climate."

HSE's primary focus is upon prevention. However, where appropriate it will come down hard on those that put others at risk, particularly where it finds deliberate flouting of the law.

In 2007/08, courts saw 1,382 prosecutions brought by HSE and local authorities; 1173 of these cases led to convictions. The average conviction penalty in a case brought by HSE is £12,896 - a cost that most businesses can ill afford.

Free parking and refreshments will also be available.
