SAFETY CASES - DO THEY ENHANCE SAFETY?
IMechE SEMINAR: 17 OCTOBER 2003

HSE press release: E139:03 - 21 July 2003

Bill Callaghan, Chair of the Health and Safety Commission (HSC), will give the keynote speech to a forthcoming seminar on the effectiveness of permissioning regimes and safety cases and the experiences of industry.

He will explain the background and thinking behind HSC's recently published Policy Statement on Permissioning Regimes; review recent evidence on the benefits of safety case regimes; and share the latest HSC's thinking on the regulation of hazardous industries.

The Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) seminar will contain presentations from the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) and industry. HSE will present the outcomes of recent and ongoing research evaluating the impact of safety cases in the onshore oil, chemical, explosives and railway industries.

Industry contributions from railways, nuclear, chemicals and aviation sectors will stimulate discussion and share views and experiences on how to further improve the effectiveness of safety cases and safety performance. The seminar will focus on how duty holders approach safety cases and whether there is evidence to show that a safety case has improved safety.
