Avoiding working at height on containers

Removing the need to regularly work on container tops can be achieved by the use of cell-guided ships, automatic twistlocks and semi- automatic twistlocks.

Port operators are unlikely to be able to influence the kind of ship used but may be able to encourage regular shipping lines that are regular customers to use automatic/semi-automatic twistlocks.

Insertion/removal of twistlocks at the quayside can result in operators being exposed to quayside traffic unless properly controlled. A safe haven should be provided. Onse way to achieve this is to construct barriers at either end of the lane adjacent to the quayside between the legs of the crane.

Storage of materials and parking of vehicles should not be allowed in this area.
