HSE Update on crane safety in ports

Following a number of recent failures of lifting equipment at ports, HSE has produced a paper outlining recommendations for routine maintenance and thorough examination and testing of cranes at ports.

MAIB publish report following a incident involving a ro-ro passenger vessel

Following a recent incident involving the unintended movement of a ro-ro passenger vessel during loading at Heysham, the MAIB have published a report.

The report recommends that Port operators:

  • Review the risks associated with passenger vessels in their ports operating engines while embarking/disembarking passengers or loading/unloading vehicles, taking into account the possible failure modes of various propulsion systems, and introduce appropriate control measures where necessary.
