1.If fitted with counter-balance springs to allow manual raising/lowering of the ends:
2. If counter-balance springs are not fitted raising/lowering must be done using a crane or other lifting equipment.
3. The locks/latches that secure the ends either upright or flat must always be used.
4. If locking pins are missing or distorted, remove the container from service until repaired.
5. If the design requires additional bracing or side gates to stabilise the end frame, these must always be used.
6. Some designs have in-built twist locks to allow stacking folded and unladen for return trips. These stacks (nests) of flat racks must always be lifted from the bottom unless it is obvious the twistlocks are designed for top lifting. Stacks need to be stowed as deck cargo to allow for bottom lifting.
