Government Departments have produced guidance to help those working with pesticides meet the requirements of the legislation.

New: Guidance for those affected by the Plant Protection Products (Sustainable Use) Regulations 2012

The Plant Protection Products (Sustainable Use) Regulations 2012 came into force on 18 July 2012, replacing the previous UK legislation governing the use of pesticides.

Guidance on the safe use and storage of plant protection products already exists in two separate Codes of Practice below. New Codes of Practice may be issued in due course. In the meantime, although some of the underlying legislative framework has changed, the general guidance contained in the existing codes remains appropriate.

In addition to this, we have produced specific guidance on the new Regulations for those who are directly affected.

The Guidance will be updated from time to time to take account of new arrangements that are put in place. We will also shortly provide a set of Frequently Asked Questions and answers, for reference.

In this guidance note plant protection products are referred to as ‘pesticides’.

Defra Publications

The Code of Practice for Using Plant Protection Products is for all professional users of plant protection products in England and Wales in respect of Part III of the Food and Environment Protection Act 1985 (FEPA) and the regulations controlling pesticides, particularly plant protection products, under that part of the Act.

Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) Code of Practice for Suppliers of Pesticides to Agriculture, Horticulture and Forestry (PB3529), (60 pages, 256Kb) (Yellow Code) gives practical guidance on the storage and transport of pesticides and the obligations on those who sell, supply and store for sale and supply.
