Paper industry
HSE's Manufacturing Sector works with industries manufacturing pulp, paper, paper board, corrugated packaging, paper conversion and paper recyclers. We also work closely with the trades unions and trade associations representing these industries.
HSE is currently running an enforcement campaign 'Safe Interventions' initiative. It is aimed at checking employers in the manufacturing sector had proper systems, procedures and safeguards, including robust isolation and lock off systems. Ensuring the safety of employees involved in cleaning, clearing blockages and making adjustments at dangerous machines. In 2007 the campaign was extended to include Entry into Confined Spaces.
HSE Inspectors visit paper mills, corrugated packaging plants and paper recyclers as part of this project. This has the full backing of the Confederation of Paper Industries (CPI) and Trades Unions, who support these efforts to improve standards across the paper industries. Inspectors use the questionnaires:- 'Safe Interventions - Enforcement Initiative - Machinery Safety' and 'Safe Interventions - Enforcement Initiative - Entry into Confined Spaces'.
