Technical assessment guides (TAGs)

The Technical Assessment Guides (TAGs) are intended to give additional guidance to NII Assessors beyond that in the HSE Safety Assessment Principles for Nuclear Facilities (SAPs).  Following the completion of the revision of SAPs in 2006 (SAPs06), consideration was given to revising the supporting TAGs.  Due to resource constraints the revision process has been delayed and will extend over a longer period than originally envisaged.

The revision of TAGs has been prioritised.  A programme was published in early 2008 which concentrated on those TAGs deemed necessary for the Generic Design Assessment (GDA) process for new civil reactor designs.  During 2008 work was undertaken on these TAGs and also to determine the full suite of TAGs that would be needed to support SAPs06.  This identified some new TAGs and that some existing ones could be combined.

Progress with the prioritised TAGs during 2008 has been reasonable given the resource constraints and the revised (and in some case new) TAGs have been published on this website.  The programme has now been revised (see accompanying table) to cover all existing TAGs.  Target dates are shown where progress is sufficient to make reasonable estimates, but the overall aim is to have all existing revised by end 2009.  For completeness the table includes new TAGs which are not currently programmed due to resource constraints.

As TAGs become available as “Working Drafts” they will be posted on this website. Comments on the programme and the Working Drafts can be made through ndenquiries@hse.gsi.gov.uk

NB.  The existing TAGs were developed to support the 1992 SAPs. These TAGs may continue to be used as appropriate guidance provided by using the identification reference in the SAPs 1992/2006 cross reference table PDF until the revised TAGs are produced.
