HSE statement in response to Stone Review and Government response

The HSE, which is a Non Departmental Public Body reporting via the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP), notes the proposals contained in the Government's response to the publication of the review it commissioned into the Nuclear Regulatory Regime, by Dr Tim Stone. The recommendations include structural changes to the HSE's Nuclear Directorate (remaining within the auspices of the HSE) and sustain the continuing emphasis on a strong, transparent and independent regulatory regime for Nuclear safety and security.

Dr Stone's recommendations involved improving the transparency and accountability of nuclear regulation to create organisational, operational and financial flexibility within the auspices of the HSE to meet the challenges of nuclear regulation into the future.

We are encouraged by the Review's recommendations and the Government response regarding the enhanced ability to attract and retain nuclear specialists in order to meet the needs of the UK nuclear industry and the challenges of building the next generation of nuclear power stations.

We look forward to working with our staff and trades unions to implement the proposals and actions are already in hand to deliver them.

Dr Stone's summary recommendations, detailed advice to Ministers, the Government's response to the report and a status report on progress in implementing Dr Stone's recommendations were available on the DECC website.
