Background
Hinkley Point A power station has an area of 19 hectares covered by the nuclear site licence. It started electricity generation in 1965 and ceased operations in 2000. Several Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) and Special Protection Areas (SPA) are situated around the site.
It is a twin reactor station currently being decommissioned, work continues to prepare the site for entry into care and maintenance.
