Guidance on safeguards and nuclear material accountancy systems for nuclear sites in the UK is consolidated in the document available above.

The guidance is the result of extensive consultation with and substantial input from those across the UK nuclear industry involved in nuclear material accountancy.  It reflects a broad consensus on how best to satisfy safeguards and nuclear material accountancy requirements and includes numerous examples of good practice as identified by the industry.

The UK guidance is designed to complement the Commission Recommendation (2009/120/Euratom) on the implementation of a nuclear material accountancy and control system by operators of nuclear installations, and should be read in conjunction with it.

National Occupational Standards and Training Standards

UK safeguards specialists from industry. ONR and Government have been working with Cogent to produce a set of occupational and training standards related to Nuclear Material Accountancy and Safeguards (NMAS). Cogent is an employer led Sector Skills Council which works with industry to research and forecast skills needs and develop fit-for-purpose standards and qualifications.  These include National Occupational Standards (NOS) that describe what an individual needs to do, know and understand in order to carry out a particular role or function, together with specifications of the underpinning knowledge and understanding.
