This report is issued as part of the Health and Safety Executive's commitment to make information about inspection and regulatory activities relating to the above site available to the public. It is for distribution to members of the Sizewell A&B Site Stakeholder Group (SSG) and covers activities associated with the regulation of safety at Sizewell A Nuclear Power Station. These reports are distributed quarterly and are available also from the Internet at http://www.hse.gov.uk/nuclear/index.htm. Site inspectors of HM Nuclear Installations Inspectorate usually attend SSG meetings and will respond to questions raised there by members of the SSG. 1. The NII Site Inspector visited Sizewell A during the following periods:
2. Other NII inspectors visited the site during this quarter to support the Site Inspector. One of these was the NII inspector who has been nominated to become the Sizewell A NII Site Inspector from 1 April 2008; his hand-over visit during February 2008 allowed him the opportunity to meet site staff, tour the facility and be briefed on all aspects of the site.
3. Compliance Inspections: Routine planned inspections are carried out throughout the year and enable NII to judge whether a licensee is complying with the conditions attached to the Nuclear Site Licence, the Ionising Radiations Regulations, and other relevant health and safety legislation. NII was satisfied, from the inspections undertaken, that Sizewell A had generally shown satisfactory compliance.
4. Incidents on Site: As part of routine, planned inspections the Site Inspector examined the licensee's arrangements for the recording and investigation of incidents at the power station and, where appropriate, undertook independent investigations to the extent that was warranted by the significance of the incident. Nothing of any significance was investigated during the period.
5. The Inspectorate has power under the Nuclear Site Licence to issue Consents, Approvals, Specifications and Directions. In addition, the Inspectorate uses arrangements under the conditions of the Licence to issue formal Agreements and Acknowledgements when nuclear safety significant modifications are proposed by the Licensee. During this reporting period Licence Instrument number 514 was issued:
LI 514 Gives HSE agreement to the fact that the licensee has adequately demonstrated the achievement of passive cooling on both reactors at Sizewell A and may proceed beyond the Passive Cooling Hold-point agreed with the Regulator.
