2. ROUTINE MATTERS

As mentioned in the July-September 2001 quarterly report the NII is discussing with Amersham the out of hours aspects of its emergency arrangements. The site inspector observed an out of hours training exercise in February and identified a number of areas requiring improvement e.g. arrangements for liaising with the external fire brigade when they arrive on site. Amersham is putting forward a programme of work to address the issues.

Inspection visits have been undertaken to look at progress being made with the decommissioning of Labs 1 and 2 and D bench. Good progress continues to be made with the post operation clean out of plants in Labs 1 and 2 prior to the start of decommissioning. Good progress is also being made in decommissioning D bench with the manual phase of the project having almost been completed. Worker doses have been kept to levels below that stipulated in the safety documentation.

Routine inspection of plant was carried out to the inspection plan and covered the following areas, control of nuclear material, storage of radium waste, operating instructions and B20 operations.

A meeting was held with the Environment Agency inspector to discuss areas of mutual interest regarding Amersham's application for a variation to the Grove Centre discharge authorisation.
