Magnox - Corporate level discussions (level 4) on internal hazards work plans and issues

Executive summary

Purpose of intervention

ONR asked for a Level 4 meeting between ONR specialist assessment inspectors in the field of internal hazards and key contacts at a corporate level within Magnox Limited.  The meeting was to act as a pilot for a series of regular meetings to give an ongoing oversight of internal hazards with the safety cases for Magnox sites and facilities.

Interventions carried out by ONR

Level 4 meeting, following discussions over a period of time.   The agenda covered:

Key findings, Inspector’s opinions and reasons for judgements made

I found the meeting very helpful.  I was given information on the current level of resource.  Magnox was able to show that they recognise challenges going forward, as the nature of the work changes and as staff approach retirement.  They will be managing the capability into the future.

We discussed some live issues, and current work plans.  We were able to identify a number of issues to progress in future interactions

Conclusion of intervention

In my view, the meeting was of value to me   I was able to highlight that the company would benefit from coordinating its work across projects for improved consistency in the area of internal hazards.  The meeting also gave me a clearer overview of the work currently underway relating to internal hazards, which should allow me to plan my work to d ensure we apply ONR’s limited resource effectively.

Recommendations

I recommend that we organise additional future meetings at a corporate level with Magnox limited on internal hazards, probably on a periodicity of about 6 months or so.
