Type Description
Fixed Locations where activities are usually permanent e.g. factories, farms, schools, hospitals, laboratories and offices. Includes both fixed and travelling fairground sites, landfill sites and multi-occupancy (S122) buildings including Nuclear plant.
Fixed Site COMAH Upper An upper tier site for the purposes of the administration of the COMAH Regulations.
Fixed Site COMAH Lower A Lower Tier site for the purposes of the administration of the COMAH Regulations.

Fixed Site Exp Acetylene A site approved under explosives legislation for the compression of acetylene

Fixed Site Exp Classification A site which has, or is applying for, an explosives classification under the Classification and Labelling of Explosives Regulations 1983.
Fixed Site Exp Authorisation A site which has, or is applying for, an explosives authorisation under the Explosives Act 1875 as modified by the Placing on the Market and Supervision of Transfers of Explosives Regulations 1993
Fixed Site Exp Fireworks An explosives site at which fireworks are manufactured, stored, tested or destroyed
Fixed Site Exp Initiating Devices An explosives site at which initiating devices are manufactured, stored, tested or destroyed
Fixed Site Exp Licensed Port A site which has, or is applying for, a licence under Part IX of the Dangerous Substances in Harbour Areas Regulations 1987
Fixed Site Exp Licensed Factory A site which has, or is applying for, a factory licence under the Explosives Act 1875
Fixed Site Other Other fixed site not elsewhere classified (not in 111-156)
Mobile Mobile not fixed locations
Roadside May be used when there is a particular need to record where a vehicle is inspected on a road for checks on compliance with legislation concerning carriage of dangerous substances.
Pipeline Onshore MH An onshore pipeline which conveys a dangerous fluid as defined by the Pipelines Safety Regulations 1996
Pipeline Onshore Other A pipeline for conveying any fluid other than air, water, water vapour or steam between two or more premises on land
Pipeline Onshore AGI MH Above ground major hazard site
Pipeline Onshore AGI Other Above ground non major hazard site
Pipeline Offshore MH An offshore pipeline which conveys a dangerous fluid as defined by the Pipelines Safety Regulations 1996
Pipeline Offshore Other A pipeline for conveying any fluid other than air, water vapour or steam between offshore installations, between offshore installations and terminals or between Great Britain and another country
Transient (above ground) Locations which are of interest to HSE solely due to the presence of transient activities. The majority of transient locations are construction or civil engineering sites and major shipbuilding / oil rig operations where HSE is required to hold information.
Transient (below ground) Locations below ground which are of interest to HSE solely due to the presence of transient activities. The majority of transient locations are construction or civil engineering sites and major shipbuilding / oil rig operations where HSE is required to hold information.
Minor Construction Used for construction work at locations where HSE has no other interest and where there is no value in holding details on the location, e.g. roof repairs to domestic property.
Minor Transient Other Used where non-construction transient work is carried out at a location where HSE has no other interest and there is no value in holding location details, e.g. gas appliance installation at domestic property

Coal Mine A mine used for the extraction of Coal
Drill Site Drilling for minerals (other than gas and oil) occurs at this location
Filled Mine A mine used for the storage of waste material

Pumping Mine A mine used to pump water to protect other mines
Storage Mine A mine used for storage purposes
Tourist Mine Tours and similar tourist activities are undertaken at this location
Other Mine This type is used for mines when CM, FM, MM, PM, SM or TM is not appropriate
Rescue Station A base for mines rescue teams
Gas Testing Centre A centre used to conduct gas testing exams
Other Location This type is used by MI when use of codes CM, DS, FM, MM, OP, PM, RS, SM, TM or GT is not appropriate
Fixed Attended An offshore installation comprising a structure fixed to the seabed which supports ATTENDED facilities above water, i.e. with personnel normally on board. The structure may be steel or concrete, and the installation may be bridge-linked to other installation.
Fixed N.U.I. An offshore installation comprising a structure fixed to the seabed which supports NOT NORMALLY ATTENDED facilities above water (although personnel may visit from time to time). The structure may be steel or concrete, and the installation may be bridge-linked to another installation.
Subsea Installation An offshore installation which is fixed to the seabed with facilities entirely below water. Usually connected by subsea pipeline to a "parent" Fixed Attended installation or Floating Production System and remotely controlled from there. May also be worked
Floating Production System (FPS) An offshore installation which floats, and which supports and maintains attended facilities in a fixed position above water. The installations itself may be of monohull, semi-submersible or other construction, and is usually anchored or similarly held in
Jack Up Mobile Drilling Unit (MODU) A floating and mobile offshore drilling installation which employs "legs" which rest on the seabed when the unit is drilling on site, and which can be raised or "jacked-up" during re-location.OSD
Semi Submersible Mobile Drilling Unit A floating and mobile offshore drilling installation employing floatation hulls which are partially flooded when the unit is drilling on site, thus providing a relatively stable drilling platform in deep water when moored in position. OSD
