Article 15 search

Before the testing of a new substance can begin, there is a legal requirement for prospective notifiers to perform an Article 15 check. This check will tell you if the substance has been notified previously and the identity of the previous notifier. In the interests of animal welfare, notifiers are encouraged to share data to prevent repeat testing on vertebrate animals.

The check is done by the competent authority using data supplied by the notifier. To deter opportunistic enquiries from firms seeking information on competitors and to help us perfom the search accurately we normally require the following information:

1. IUPAC name (or description if a UVCB substance).
2. Structure and molecular formula.
3. CAS number (if known).
4. Spectroscopic and analytical data as required under items 1.3.5 and 1.4 (including details of the nature and percentage of impurities)
5. Intended use and quantity to be placed on the EU market.
6. EEC number for the substance if believed to be on ELINCS.
7. Stereochemistry for optical/geometric isomers.
