HSE investigation into the Inflatable Artwork incident, County Durham

Durham Police and the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) are jointly investigating an incident that took place at Riverside Park, Chester-le Street, County Durham on the afternoon of Sunday 23 July, and are following the Work Related Death Protocol [PDF 60kb] procedures for this type of incident.
A large inflatable art installation that was erected in the park lifted and tumbled. Two members of the public died as a result of the incident and others were injured, including a three-year-old girl.
HSE has set up an investigation team providing technical support to the police. A specialist engineer has joined the HSE team today, and the investigation will look at all aspects of the design of the structure. The team will centre preliminary investigations on the design and anchoring arrangements for the inflatable structure and the deflated structure, ropes and anchor pins have been taken into possession by the police.
