Farewell to Sir Bill Callaghan

The Health and Safety Commission (HSC) and the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) say farewell today to Sir Bill Callaghan, Chair of the Health and Safety Commission.

For the past eight years, Bill has played a pivotal role in raising awareness of the importance of ensuring that risks to the health and safety of workers are properly controlled and in forging partnerships between HSE and employers, trade unions and other stakeholders. He has been instrumental in developing the HSC's Strategy to 2010, and has personally championed the sensible risk message. We were all delighted when his outstanding achievement and service to health and safety was recognised in this year's Birthday Honours List when he received a well deserved knighthood.

I would therefore like the opportunity to thank Bill on behalf of HSE for all he has done and wish him every success and happiness for the future.

Geoffrey Podger
HSE Chief Executive
