Following confirmation that Foot and Mouth Disease has been found on a farm near Guildford in Surrey on Friday, the overall response is being led by COBR (chaired by the Prime Minister) with HSE playing an important role.
The Prime Minister has asked HSE to lead an investigation into biosecurity issues at the nearby Pirbright laboratory facilities (Merial Animal Health Ltd and the Institute for Animal Health).
HSE is now leading an investigation to provide information and advice to the Environment Secretary and Chief Veterinary Officer. HSE brings expertise in both investigation and the containment of biological agents.
The investigation also involves support from relevant experts including those from DEFRA, Veterinary Medicines Directorate and the Environment Agency, and will provide a report tomorrow on its immediate findings.
