Top Gear incident

HSE and police are investigating the incident involving Richard Hammond

The HSE is investigating an incident on Wednesday 20 September 2006 in which Richard Hammond, presenter of BBC TV's Top Gear programme, was injured when the jet-powered dragster he was driving overturned at the former RAF airfield at Elvington, near York.

Inspectors from HSE's Yorks and North East Field Operations Division attended the scene on Thursday to begin a joint investigation with the police.

At this stage HSE's enquiries relate primarily to the planning, preparation and organising of the activities, including the marshalling and emergency arrangements. Due to the complexities and uniqueness of the incident, the investigation is likely to take some time.
