Crookhill Primary School incident

Gateshead Council Director of Learning and Schools, David Mitchell said: "Crookhill Primary School will re-open on Monday 20 November. "The school boilers are currently out of use pending remedial work. The Health and Safety Executive has assured us that there is no residual carbon monoxide risk from the original heating system.

"A temporary heating system will be provided and we would like to reassure parents that a full risk assessment has been carried out accordingly. In addition, carbon monoxide detectors will be in place before the pupils return on Monday. The safety of the children and our staff is, and always will be, our primary concern.

"We will continue to work closely with the Health and Safety Executive to undertake any necessary remedial work based on its findings and recommendations."

Statement from HSE:

Mrs Pam Waldron, Head of Operations, Health and Safety Executive said: "We have concluded our investigations on site and we have established how the incident occurred.

"The school boilers, which gave rise to the carbon monoxide exposures, have been taken out of use. Tests carried out yesterday confirmed that the building was clear of carbon monoxide. The investigation is continuing."

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) is continuing its investigation into the incident at Crookhill Primary School, Gateshead.

Pam Waldron, Head of Operations, for HSE in the North East said:

"From the information we have, we are treating this as a carbon monoxide incident. The focus of our enquiries is the three gas fired boilers underneath the classroom and their fluing arrangements.

"The HSE team is on site today and will be joined by a specialist engineer from HSL, Buxton and an engineer from CORGI.

"Yesterday we issued a notice that the boilers should not be used and access to the boiler room is currently under HSE control. HSE is receiving full co-operation from the head teacher and her staff, the governors and Gateshead Council.

"The school is closed today (15 Nov) and we are meeting representatives from the school and Gateshead Council later this afternoon to discuss the progress of the investigation and what the implications for re-opening the school will be."

Pam Waldron Head of Operations for HSE in the North East and Dr Peter Dodman, Principal Inspector are available for interview outside the school gates between 3.30pm and 3.45pm.
