Department for Communities and Local Government works to ensure the right development, in the right place, at the right time. Also works to protect and enhance the environment through the planning system.
Department for Energy and Climate Change brings together much of the Climate Change Group, previously housed within the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA), with the Energy Group from the Department for Business (BERR).
Department for the Environment (Northern Ireland) Working in partnership to improve the natural and built environment, plan and manage development in a sustainable way, increase road safety and support local government.
Environment Agency – the leading public body for protecting and improving the environment in England and Wales.
Health and Safety Executive – the Health and Safety Commission is responsible for health and safety regulation in Great Britain. The Health and Safety Executive and local government are the enforcing authorities who work in support of the Commission.
HSE's Nuclear Directorate is responsible for the UK safety regulation of nuclear power stations. Its primary goal is to ensure that those it regulates have no major nuclear accidents.
Information Commissioner's Office – an independent UK supervisory authority responsible for data protection and freedom of information.
Nuclear Decommissioning Authority – a non-departmental public body responsible for overseeing and managing the clean-up of the UK's civil nuclear legacy.
Radiation Protection Division (formerly NRPB) – part of the Health Protection Agency. A non-departmental public body providing an integrated approach to protecting UK public health with radiation protection as part of health protection in its remit.
UK nuclear industry – organisations and committees
British Nuclear Energy Society – provides information on nuclear sector issues and opportunities for members to meet and debate issues locally, nationally and internationally.
Committee on Radioactive Waste Management (CORWM) – an independent body responsible for reviewing the options for managing the UK's radioactive waste to provide a long-term solution that protects people and the environment.
Nuclear Research – the Nuclear Research Programme is managed within HSE's Nuclear Safety Directorate (NSD) and is devoted to nuclear industry specific issues.
Nuclear Safety Advisory Committee (NuSAC) advises the Health and Safety Commission (HSC) on matters regarding nuclear safety policy, its implementation at nuclear installations and on the adequacy and balance of HSC's nuclear safety research programme.
European Atomic Forum (FORATOM) – Brussels-based trade association for the nuclear energy industry in Europe. Foratom acts as the voice of the industry in energy policy discussions involving the EU institutions and provide a 'bridge' between the industry and the institutions (Members of the European Parliament and key policy-makers in the European Commission).
OECD Nuclear Energy Agency (NEA) – an agency within the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) responsible for maintaining and further developing, through international co-operation, the scientific, technological and legal bases required for the safe, environmentally friendly and economical use of nuclear energy for peaceful purposes.
World Nuclear Association (WNA) – seeks to promote the peaceful worldwide use of nuclear power as a sustainable energy resource.
