ONR and the Environment Agency started assessing two new nuclear reactor designs in 2007:
The generic design assessment for the UK EPR reactor is now complete. The regulators are satisfied that this reactor, designed by EDF Energy and Areva, meets regulatory expectations on safety, security and environmental impact. You can read more about our decision here.
Westinghouse will not address any of the GDA Issues until it secures a UK customer. Accordingly, we have undertaken no work on the AP1000® reactor during 2012.
We wanted the assessment to be open and transparent and encourage the public to become involved. To do that, we asked the companies to publish their safety, security and environmental reports on their websites, except for those parts containing sensitive or commercially confidential information.
