Case 272 - Bundles of newspapers for return will not be removed from a newsagents by supplier if more than 7 inches

Issue

A newsagents supplier delivers newspapers each day and collects any not sold from the previous day. Recently the newsagent was informed by the supplier that any parcel of returns over 7 inches would not be taken for health & safety reasons

Panel decision

The panel believes that limiting the size of newspaper bundles is a sensible way of managing the risk of delivery drivers suffering musculoskeletal injury from lifting bundles that are too heavy. It would have been much better if this had been properly explained to the newsagent rather than issuing an arbitrary "7 inch rule" in the name of health and safety.
