Case 262 - Children riding in supermarket trolleys

Issue

Tannoy announcement in supermarket stated that, 'due to Health and Safety legislation, children are not allowed to sit or stand in trolley other than in seat provided’.

Panel decision

The panel agrees that the supermarket is offering sensible advice to customers with small children –trolley seats are provided and should be used properly to ensure children’s safety. It would be better if the tannoy message did not state health and safety legislation as the reason – this is actually about common sense, responsible behaviour by parents/carers and proper use of the facilities provided.
