Case 201 - A visitor to an historic church site was refused access with their children in a push chair because of health and safety

Issue

A visitor to an historic church site was refused access with their children in a push chair. They were advised that this was because of 'health and safety' rules and would have to leave the push chair outside.

Panel decision

The museum have confirmed that the reason for their "no pushchairs" policy in the church is in order to protect the ancient structure, not because of health and safety. A fuller explanation to visitors with prams about protecting the structure of the building would have been better rather than misleadingly claiming it was for health and safety reasons. The museum is now committed to providing a proper explanation of their rule
