Case 182 - School bans hair clips and jewellery during PE lessons for health and safety reasons

Issue

A school is using health and safety as the explanation for their policy on personal effects – including hair clips and jewellery.

Panel decision

The school’s policy in relation to removal of all jewellery and personal effects during PE is a sensible one and is consistent with practice throughout many sports communities. Better communication of the reasons for this and ensuring that parents understand what is and what is not allowed would have been helpful rather than just reverting to the use of “health and safety”.Whether a school permits pupils to wear jewellery at other times is a matter for the school uniform policy – it has nothing to do with occupational health and safety.
