Case 161 - A sleepover event at a national museum allows foam mattresses but not inflatable ones

Issue

A national museum is hosting a 'sleepover' event and has advised those attending that they can bring a foam mattress to sleep on but not an inflatable one on the grounds of health and safety.

Panel decision

There is no health and safety legislation which would prevent the use of air mattresses and the panel can think of no health and safety reason behind this decision. The Museum should be challenged to give its real reason rather than offering the health and safety excuse.
