Case 145 - A hotel has stopped delivering room service meals to residents in the attached apartment block on the grounds of health and safety

Issue

A resident in an apartment block attached to a hotel used to be able to order room service meals to his apartment. The hotel has said that it was no longer possible to offer this service because their external health and safety consultants have advised that food items may not be taken off the premises, and apartments are not within the hotel itself.

Panel decision

There is no health and safety regulation that would prohibit the hotel from providing room service to apartments in the same building. If the hotel want to continue to provide the service they should challenge the policy they received from their health and safety advisers or alternatively they should own up to the real reason why they are no longer willing to provide the service.
