Case 141 - Country Club insists on coats being put in the cloakroom because of health and safety

Issue

Whilst attending a music event at a Country Club, customers told they could not take coats into the venue, but had to put them in the cloakroom and pay cloakroom charges. They were told that this was due to "Health & Safety".

Panel decision

There is no specific legislation which bans coats being taken into venues - and many clubs and concert venues continue to allow it. This particular club management have stated that the decision has been taken because of a concern about coats causing a tripping hazard in the event of an evacuation. It is not possible for the panel to assess whether this is a disproportionate decision or not without knowing more details of the club layout.
