Case 139 - Hospital wards ban the use of toasters

Issue

A press article said that toasters had been banned from NHS hospital wards on the grounds of health and safety.

Panel decision

There are no health and safety regulations which ban the use of toasters or any other similar electrical appliance in hospitals provided they are in good working condition. Anyone who has a toaster at home will know that burnt toast is notoriously effective in setting off smoke alarms and it is more likely to be the consequent disruption that lies behind the ban.
