Case 106 - Bowling shoes must not be worn outside due to H&S

A sign on the door that says "Bowling Shoes must not be worn outside for health and safety reasons" is displayed in the enquirers local bowling alley.

Panel decision

The panel believes that the real issue here is concern about mud and dirt from outside contaminating the bowling shoes and then being brought into the bowling alley where it may damage the floor surface. This is not a health and safety matter and there are certainly no regulations which specify that indoor shoes cannot be worn outside.

The organisation should state the real reason on their notice not hide behind health and safety out of convenience.
