Case 73 - Charity would not allow volunteers to remove graffiti because of 'health and safety' concerns

Issue

The enquirer claims that a charity who carry out works on local canals and rivers would not allow volunteers to remove graffiti on the bridges because of 'health and safety' concerns.

Panel decision

The Charity correctly acknowledges that they have responsibilities for the health and safety of both employees and volunteers working on their sites. It would be desirable if they engaged effectively with their volunteers to ensure these health and safety concerns were addressed so that volunteers could contribute towards the upkeep of our waterways.
