Case 38 - Royal Mail suspended deliveries to businesses in Doncaster after postman suffered broken shoulder

Issue

Royal Mail had suspended deliveries to businesses on South Parade, Doncaster, during "adverse weather conditions" following an incident where a postman suffered a broken shoulder after slipping on algae and moss on the pavement.

Panel decision

Royal Mail were right to review the risks in this street after one of their employees was injured but it seems strange that delivery was suspended to the whole street rather than just limited to those houses where there was deemed to be a significant risk. A more targeted approach could have led to a quicker resolution and less disruption of deliveries for residents. We are pleased to learn that Royal Mail are now working with Doncaster Metropolitan Borough Council and the residents of South Parade in order to enable normal delivery to resume.
