Case 12 - Truck driver asked to give keys to another person when unloading or loading for health and safety reasons

Issue

When unloading, or loading a truck, the driver is often asked to give the keys to another person and the reason given is for health and safety. The driver is concerned about the insurance implications of handing his keys over.

Panel decision

It is a widely operated practice in loading/unloading bays to operate a key exchange scheme which prevents the vehicle being driven away whilst loading/unloading is taking place. The complainant needs to talk to his own employer about better means of securing personal belongings in the vehicle rather than seeking to change an industry wide effective practice.
