Case 8 - Caravan Club removed irons and ironing boards from sites on the grounds of health and safety

Issue

The Caravan Club magazine had reported that it was removing irons and ironing boards from its sites on the grounds of health and safety. The Caravan Club had clarified the matter through its member discussion pages to advise that the removal was due to the cost of doing Portable Appliance Testing which they were carrying out every six months.

Panel decision

It is not uncommon for people to engage in portable appliance testing which far exceeds what is required and at unnecessary cost. In many cases there may be scope for appliance testing costs to be reduced or even eliminated but the panel suspects that this instance was an economic decision because of drop off in use of the facility, conveniently hidden behind the "health and safety" excuse.
