Problems with viewing MAC Tool videos

If problems persist, please let us know by selecting the Feedback link at the top of this page, and filling in the HSE Website Feedback Form.

You click on the "Play Video" link and nothing happens

These videos are delivered in a separate window. If you have a 'pop up stopper' installed you will need to switch it off to watch the video.

The video window appears with the message "Your Computer Settings will not allow you to watch the video"

This error occurs when your computer cannot process the Java enabled video stream. Your computer may not have the JavaTM Platform installed or it may not be activated. In order to activate the JavaTM Platform, follow the steps below.

Microsoft® Internet Explorer (IE)

  • In IE you can activate the JavaTM Platform under Tools -> Internet Options -> Security in the top menu bar.
  • Select the Internet security zone by clicking once on the planet. Then select the ‘Custom Level' button at the bottom of the dialog box.
  • Scroll down the list until you find the heading Microsoft® VM. Choose here either ‘High", Low" or "Medium safety".

Netscape® Navigator

  • In Navigator choose Edit -> Preferences from the menu bar and then select Advanced from the left hand navigator pane.
  • Click on the option Enable Java and press OK.

There is no sound

Although there is music at the beginning, these videos do not rely on your system having speakers.

Playback is jerky or the message "Buffering" appears regularly at the bottom of the screen during playback

The video is encoded at various speeds in order to present the best possible video for your connection speed, however your connection speed may not be high enough to watch the video without these interruptions.

If you are using IE and you are sure that you have a fast connection, check that "JIT compiler" is enabled under Tools -> Internet Options ->Advanced->Microsoft VM.

If you are using a “Dial-up” connection you may experience these problems because of technical limitations caused by your connection rate, if below 30Kbps this may be the reason.

The error message tells me that my operating system is not supported

There are many different combinations of operating systems and browser versions. With most combinations you will be able to watch the video, however older operating systems (Windows 95 or earlier) and internet browsers may not be able display the video.

I can't watch video and I am using an Apple® Mac®

Unfortunately JavaTM Enabled Video is not widely supported on the Apple® Macintosh® Platform
