A manufacturing company kept bulk chemicals stored in an open room so that trained operators could help themselves as the operation required.
Some of the most used chemicals came in large tubs weighing between 20 and 25 kg and some of these were stored on the floor or at shoulder height. This meant reaching down or up, both of which increase the risk of injury.
To address the risk the company drew up guidelines requiring the storage of heavy loads to enable them to be lifted at waist height. It ensured the guidelines were discussed in team meetings so that everyone who used the store area knew what to do and why, and also provided refresher training on manual handling to staff.
No new shelving was needed, just an understanding amongst all staff that heavy items were to be stored on the shelf that was at the best height. The savings from avoiding accidents and injury cannot be estimated but could be considerable. As a bonus, the chemicals are easier to find as each one has a dedicated place in the storeroom.
