Low-cost solutions improve manual handling

A copper wire producer reported several back injuries over a few months. Investigation showed considerable manual handling of empty and full reels of copper wire using lifting straps, with the lifter bending and twisting. Once out of the machine, full reels of copper wire were rolled along the floor, using the foot, then lifted onto a pallet by hand. Workers loaded the pallet with two or three layers of reels, while in a bent position. This was a contributing factor to their back injuries.
