Morecambe Bay
HSE is deeply concerned about the tragic deaths of the cockle-pickers in Morecambe Bay and wishes to extend its sympathies to the families of those who lost their lives. We are supporting the police-led investigation into this tragic incident, although inquiries are still at an early stage.
Our aims are to ensure we establish the factors which led to it; to use the law to hold to account anyone who has put people at risk by breaking the law; and to identify lessons to help protect workers in Britain in future.
The Health & Safety Commission and Executive is determined to ensure that society at large learns the lessons from this tragedy and that the rights of all workers, including the most vulnerable, are properly safeguarded. Health and safety law protects all workers, including those who may be working illegally.
We have developed an emerging set of guidelines for safe working in estuaries and tidal areas.
