Managing your fluids properly
Metalworking fluids - cleaning a heavily contaminated water-mix fluid sump
Flowchart description
- Add system cleaner (a) and fungicide (b) to the existing fluid and circulate for time (c) ensuring that all fluid pipes are open.
- Empty the fluid/cleaner/fungicide mixture and manually clean out liquid and swarf using brushes, scrapers etc.
- Spray wash the visible areas of the system using a high-pressure jet.
- Clean all hose connections, filters, splash screens and tramp oil separators.
- Refill with system cleaner (d) and fungicide (e) in warm water and circulate for time (f).
- Empty the machine and sump and rinse with dilute water-mix fluid.
- Empty the machine and fill with new water-mix fluid at the supplier’s recommended concentration.
- Put the machine back into operation and test the fluid for bacteriological contamination using a dip slide (link to MW5).
- Carry on using the machine if the dip slide indicates good control of bacteria. Repeat the cleaning process if the dip slide indicates poor or reasonable control.
