Health and safety newsletter for local authorities

Editorial by Nick O’Donnell

Hopefully, many of you will have seen or heard the publicity for the Shattered Lives campaign. The excellent posters certainly brought home the message that workplace accidents and work-related ill health can ruin the lives of people. Further details of the campaign are highlighted below in the ‘For Action’ section. We have been working to deliver similar messages as part of our work on local area agreements (LAAs) and community planning. Improved health and safety contributes to the economic prosperity and well-being of local communities and we have produced an LAA Guide to support this message. The Guide is supported by a letter from Judith Hackitt, Chair of HSC. These were sent to all local authority Chief Executives in England at the beginning of March. We will be looking to produce similar documents to cover Wales and Scotland.

You will also see that we are publicising the HELA Awards for Innovation in this month’s newsletter. We hope that local authorities will submit examples of the many excellent campaigns and interventions that they carry out with partners across their community. As a slight extension to this theme, we would also very much welcome your contributions, ideas, news and any other information for the newsletter. This is your opportunity to tell us about what you have done, or where you may need further assistance, to make a difference and improve the lives for all workers.

We have now uploaded a new Local Area Agreement section to the LAU website (and the HELex), please take a look.

Thank you.

Nick
