If a gas supply emergency occurs the gas industry will need to act quickly and safely. This action relies on holding correct information for Large End Users of gas, who have sites on firm contracts which individually consume more than 732,000 kWh (25,000 therms) per annum. This is because these users may be asked to stop using gas to help manage the emergency.
In an emergency situation, the Gas Safety (Management) Regulations 1996 (GSMR) allow Gas Transporters (as gas conveyors) to direct any gas consumer to stop using gas. It is a criminal offence for the person receiving the direction to knowingly fail to comply and could result in forced isolation of supply by the Transporter.
If you are a Large End User it is your responsibility to provide and maintain accurate emergency contact details and it is vital that your emergency contact is in a position to accept and carry out the direction in a safe manner. Please read the leaflet below, check that your contact details are correct and ensure your suppliers hold that correct information. HSE will monitor your co-operation under GSMR.
