Gas installer registration body

A new regime for domestic gas safety

On 27 July 2007, HSE launched the competition for a new gas registration scheme (the new scheme). Information on the benefits from this scheme are outlined on the website pages detailing the new regime for domestic gas safety.

Currently, all gas installation businesses, including self-employed gas installers, are required to be in membership of a ‘class of persons’ approved by HSE. Currently, the only body with such approval is the Council for Registered Gas Installers – CORGI.Any gas installer who you employ should be CORGI registered and carry an ID card to support this.

CORGI Identification

Using a gas installer who is not registered with CORGI is not only illegal but can be dangerous, as there is no guarantee of the installer’s competence. CORGI - registered installers have been trained in gas safety and the standards needed for appliances and installations. CORGI work hard to improve standards in industry and help to train and educate their registered installers so you can be sure that any work completed by a CORGI - registered installer will be done competently and safely. ALL CORGI registered installers must carry a CORGI ID card. Always ask to see the CORGI ID card before any installer begins work on your gas appliances.

If you have any doubt about the gas installer’s card or registration then contact CORGI on 0870 401 2300 or use their website to check the ID card.

If you are unsure where to find a CORGI-registered installer, CORGI offer a free service on their website to find an installer near you.

CORGI Complaints

CORGI’s complaint system is outlined on their website. If you have a complaint about work under taken by a CORGI registered installer or any part of CORGI’s operating procedure then this must be taken up with CORGI. They have an online form you can fill out with your complaint, or if you would prefer, you can write to them or contact them by phone, their details are provided below.

CORGI has in place its own general procedures for the routine monitoring of registered businesses and installers, and for investigating complaints. It would not normally be appropriate for HSE to become drawn into the consideration of individual cases.
