Current status (at January 2010)

Published by CEN: 1999

Published by BSI: 2000

Reviewed: 2006 when a decision was taken to completely revise the Standard. The Standard is being revised by CEN/TC 146 WG1 convened by T. Gangkofner (DIN)

The revised version of EN 415-2 is unlikely to be published until 2011.

Amended: No amendments

Note: This Standard has only been harmonized to the Machinery Directive 98/37/EC and so when this Directive is replaced by 2006/42/EC on 30th December 2009 this Standard will cease to be a harmonized Standard

Clause 3 defines the typical terminology used when discussing these machines like carousel, counter pressure filling and lifting cylinder.

Injuries caused by preformed rigid container packaging machines

Clause 4 of the Standard identifies the injuries that can be caused by each type of preformed rigid container packaging machine.

The typical injuries caused by preformed rigid container packaging machines are:

Safety principles established by this Standard

Safeguarding of danger zones

Clause 5.1 confirms that the main method of preventing access to danger zones on these machines is the use of fixed and interlocking guards.

Filling machines

Clause 5.2.1 explains that electro-sensitive protection equipment (ESPE) and safety by design techniques can only be used on filling machines where there is no risk from ejected packaging materials or substances.

Cleaning machines

In addition to describing the appropriate methods of providing protection from mechanical hazards, Clause 5.2.3 describes the methods to avoid risks from the cleaning agents typically used in these machines including fitting guard locking devices to interlocked guards with a time delay sufficiently long to ensure depressurization or draining of the cleaning agent before the guard door can be opened.

Labelling machines

In addition to describing the methods of safeguarding mechanical hazards on these machines, Clause 5.2.5 describes the methods for safeguarding the various types of coding equipment fitted to these machines including:

Kegging equipment

Clause 5.2.10 gives separate requirements for automatic and semi-automatic handling systems

Effects of the Standard

When it was first published EN 415-2 largely recorded the methods of safeguarding typically used at the time on preformed rigid container packaging machines and so there have been no perceptible changes following the publication of this Standard.

Purchasing the Standard

EN 415-2 can be purchased as BS EN 415-2: 2000 from BSI Standards.
