Health and Safety Director (and/or MD)

  • What are your key responsibilities for H&S (e.g. champion/focus for H&S at Board level, policy and standard setting, monitoring, job descriptions etc)?
  • How do you demonstrate leadership?
  • How does the organisation set standards for risk control?
  • What is your opinion about the standards set and how well they are achieved?
  • Is there an organisational health and safety plan/objectives/targets (annual/longer) (discuss who/how produced, content, resourcing)?
  • Do you have a personal workplan/H&S objectives – how are you held accountable?
  • What role do you have in proactive monitoring of H&S performance?
  • What role do you have in reactive incident investigations?
  • What H&S reports does the board receive, do you think this is enough/the right information, how could it be better?
  • Are the H&S implications of business decisions recognised and addressed at board level?

Simplistic organisations

  • What H&S information/training have you (and other board members) had?
  • How do you/the board access competent advice?
  • How is progress monitored/reviewed?
  • How effective is worker consultation/engagement?
  • What are the organisations top 3 actual/residual risks (areas which need more/better control)?
  • Are there adequate plans in place to achieve this/ what are the obstacles?

Competent person (e.g. H&S Advisor, Occupational Health Advisor)

  • What are your main responsibilities?
  • What are your main qualifications?
  • What is your experience?
  • How do you keep up to date?
  • How is Leadership demonstrated?
  • How were you involved in producing the Health and Safety Policy/Procedures (or policy relating to specific area of expertise)?
  • How useful/relevant is it (e.g. up to date, covers all relevant areas/risks, defines responsibilities clearly) and do people use it?
  • Where do you fit in the organisational structure – what is your opinion about this (e.g. sufficiently senior, right reporting lines etc)?
  • Is your role clear (e.g. to advise managers, not to do H&S for them)?

  • Are there any routine checks of H&S standards in your area, who by, how are they reported?
  • Are accidents etc investigated – how, what happens as a result?
