Slips and trips in hairdressing

No specific project this year

Aim

To reduce the number of major injury slip and trip accidents within hairdressing by raising awareness and improving management of slips and trips. To provide advice on practical control measures and take enforcement action where appropriate.

Justification

Very few slips happen to hairdressers (29 major injuries last year).

Audience/industry

Water, hair products and hair clipping on smooth floors are a common cause of slips. While trailing leads and ill placed customer bags can cause trips. When inspecting focus on controlling floor contamination to prevent slips.

Messages

Everyone has a part to play when it comes to stopping slips and trips. Supervisors, managers and business owners need to set up effective systems for preventing slips and trips, then ensure staff are informed, trained and following those systems. Staff can make a big difference by adopting a ‘see it, sort it’ mentality.

Activities Required

During routine inspections raise this topic if it is matter of evident concern. Carry out routine investigations following complaints or accidents. Enforcement action as appropriate.

Timing

All year.
