A Taster of Work Related Health Surveillance

Many small businesses are not aware of occupational health surveillance and its benefits. It provides you with information that helps you to protect employees from illnesses caused by exposure at work. As well as:

• how your controls are working
• helping to pinpoint where you need to take further steps
• valuable opportunity for feedback from employees

During the visit, we will walk around your site to try to understand what your business does. Because of this, we may offer you a further 15-minute visit from a Specialist Occupational Health Nurse. They will establish:

• if there a real work related health risk to your employees
• explain the risks to you and how you can control them
• offer appointments for some of your employees for Health Surveillance

If we offer an appointment, the nurse will identify your employees most at risk; we will not test all your staff. The aim is to give your business a taste of how health surveillance works. The Health Surveillance tasters offered by Estates Excellence are non-invasive tests. The tests and questionnaires will look at:

• Respiratory (lung function tests)
• Hearing (audiometry)
• Dermatitis (visual skin check)
• Hand Arm Vibration (HAVS)

Once the tests and questionnaires are complete, we will:

• Refer anyone identified with serious risks to their health to a Doctor we will provide on site
• Write to the employees with their results
• Write to you with all your employees individual results
• Write to you with all the employees results together to help identify any trends
