A trained fork lift truck (FLT) driver seriously injured a fellow employee when the FLT he was operating burst through a roller shutter door. The FLT driver had previously been operating the FLT in a side saddle position using only his left hand to steer and operate the gears. As the driver moved his legs around to the correct position (sitting facing forwards) to enter a drop off area, he inadvertently struck the accelerator pedal causing the FLT to burst through the roller shutter door and strike the employee. The employee was seriously injured.
The FLT driver was successfully prosecuted, fined £1000 and costs of £250.00.
